01 — The Farm
Six generations in Ohariu Valley
Conscious Valley is based at Huiawa — a 420-hectare farm of steep to rolling hill country in Ohariu Valley, where Hamish’s family has been farming sheep and cattle for six generations.
Hamish was born and raised in Wellington and spent 10 years advising farmers in Hawkes Bay and Australia. He’s now back running the farm and bringing the meat to market with the support of his partner Caroline.
“Just over the hill on the west coast of Wellington lies a hidden gem for discerning food enthusiasts.”
02 — The Farming System
Rotational grazing on diverse coastal pastures
Huiawa’s hill country pastures are home to diverse species of grasses, legumes and broadleaf herbs — grazed under a rotational system that encourages diversity in both flora and fauna. Pockets of native Manuka, Karaka, Tauhinu and Kanuka grow throughout the farm.
All livestock are free range and grass fed. Specialised forage crops supplement the farm’s natural feed supply when needed — future-proofing the farm through seasonal variation.
As custodians of this land, Hamish and Caroline are committed to retiring unproductive areas and working toward carbon neutral farming — a slow process they’re in for the long term.
Animal Welfare
Animal welfare is one of Huiawa’s two major priorities. All stock are free range, grass fed, and never given antibiotics or hormones.
Environmental Care
The farm is actively working toward carbon neutrality — retiring unproductive land, protecting waterways, and encouraging native regeneration.
Lowest Food Miles
Just 8km from Wellington CBD — some of the lowest food miles of any red meat producer in the Wellington region.
03 — The Meat
Flavoured by Wellington’s coastal winds
Huiawa sits on the west coast of Wellington, overlooking Cook Strait. The salt-laden breezes that sweep the coast season the diverse pastures the animals graze on — infusing the meat with a character that is uniquely Wellington-grown.
Conscious Valley’s breeding programme focuses on high-yielding carcasses with good levels of marbling, producing meat that is tender, flavoursome and consistent.
“Our meat has some of the lowest food miles in Wellington — grown 8km from the CBD and brought directly to your table.”
Angus & Shorthorn Cattle + Speckled Park
Traditional Angus and Shorthorns form the core of the beef herd, with Speckled Park genetics introduced to improve marbling potential — resulting in beef with outstanding tenderness and depth of flavour.
Romney × Texel Sheep
Highly maternal ewes with high meat-yielding lambs. Romney × Texel crosses are well-suited to New Zealand hill country and produce lamb with excellent eating quality and consistent yields.
