01 — Our Story
Built by farmers, for farmers and the people who eat their food
Out the Farm Gate began with a simple idea: two farmers wanted to build a direct connection between their farms and you, the consumer. As they embarked on this journey, they realised that many other farmers were eager to do the same — but didn’t know where to start.
That’s when Out the Farm Gate grew into something bigger — a platform dedicated to helping farmers forge meaningful connections with the people who enjoy their food.
“Imagine your next steak — knowing exactly which farm it came from, how the animal lived, and the land it grazed on.”
02 — What We’ve Built
One place to discover regenerative farmers selling direct
We’ve created a single destination where you can discover regenerative farmers selling beef and lamb directly to you. Explore different breeds — each with its own unique flavour profile — and learn about the farmers behind your food.
We want you to understand the care these farmers take. Not just in raising healthy, flavourful meat, but in nurturing their land and environment for future generations.
Every farmer on Out the Farm Gate is rated using our Farm Rating system — from Conventional through to Tier 4 Regenerative — so you always know exactly what kind of operation you’re buying from.
03 — Why Regenerative Farming
Soil first. Everything else follows.
Regenerative farming sits at the heart of every farmer on Out the Farm Gate. We exist to connect people with NZ farmers who raise meat using practices that improve soil health, animal wellbeing, and long-term farm resilience.
At the core of regenerative farming is an understanding that healthy soil is alive. A single teaspoon of living soil can contain hundreds of millions — even billions — of microorganisms working in partnership with plants. Through photosynthesis, plants send up to 30% of the sugars they produce into the soil to feed these microbes. In return, the microbes unlock nutrients that plants need to grow strong and resilient.
Our farmers actively build this soil life through diverse pastures, constant ground cover, and carefully managed grazing. Cattle are moved frequently — often once or twice a day — to mimic natural grazing patterns. This short-duration, high-impact grazing stimulates soil biology, boosts carbon-rich soil development, and supports thriving ecosystems both above and below ground.
Soil Health
Diverse pastures and managed grazing build living soils rich in biology — the foundation of everything.
Animal Wellbeing
Animals raised in conditions that match their nature — space, pasture, and low-stress handling from paddock to plate.
Farm Resilience
Farming systems that sequester carbon, protect waterways, and leave the land better than they found it.
04 — Why It Matters
Every cut supports a farm that cares for the land
When you buy direct from a regenerative farmer through Out the Farm Gate, you’re not just getting better meat. You’re supporting a food system that heals the land while producing nutrient-dense, ethically raised beef and lamb.
No supermarket margins. No mystery about where it came from. Just honest food from farmers who are proud to put their name to it — and happy for you to know exactly how it was raised.
