A permaculture family farm on Northland’s West Coast
Wild Meadows sits between rolling pastures and native bush on Northland’s West Coast — a landscape shaped by coastal air and one that rewards careful, thoughtful management. We farm holistically, raising beef in a way that restores land, supports biodiversity, and delivers exceptional flavour.
We use holistic planned grazing that mimics natural herd movement — shifting cattle frequently across diverse pastures and giving each paddock time to rest and recover before re-grazing. This approach builds healthy, carbon-rich soils, supports thriving soil biology, and keeps cattle calm. The result is beef with depth of flavour and real character.
No synthetic fertilisers, no agrochemicals, no dewormers, no antibiotics — just diverse pastures, healthy soil, and animals raised the way they should be.
“We believe healthy beef starts with healthy soil and farm ecosystems. Every animal contributes to a wider ecosystem that supports native birds, beneficial insects, and thriving soil life.”
Well-grown beef cattle, daily-shifted on diverse pastures
Following strong permaculture principles, we make the most of existing resources. We select well-bred beef-cross cattle from local dairy farms — giving them a full, healthy life on our farm instead of being sent to the abattoir as calves. From the moment they arrive, our cattle graze diverse, nutrient-rich pastures and are rotated daily onto fresh paddocks.
Only the best, well-grown two-year-old animals are selected for processing. They’re slaughtered on-farm using a mobile abattoir — a calm, familiar environment with no transport stress — then dry-aged on the bone for approximately 10 days to deepen flavour. Locally, independent butchers handle the processing with respect.
Free from dewormers, antibiotics, and other pharmaceuticals. Not Halal processed. Honest, grass-fed beef raised the way it should be.
Soil first · Permaculture · Connection
Three values that guide every decision at Wild Meadows. Not marketing words — this is genuinely how we think about our place on the land.
🌱 Soil First
“Healthy beef starts with healthy soil. Holistic rotational grazing builds deeper roots, more organic matter, and a thriving soil ecosystem. The land gets richer year after year — and the cattle grazing it produce beef with real depth of flavour.”
🌿 Permaculture
“We make the most of existing resources. Beef-cross calves from local dairy farms get a full life here instead of going to the abattoir young — fed on diverse pastures, fruit, vegetables, and eggs all grown using all-natural regenerative methods.”
🤝 Connection
“Our farm is a safe, natural environment for our children to connect with the land and understand where food comes from. We also welcome community and customers to visit — to see firsthand how ethical, sustainable farming works.”
What to expect, from order to pickup
A few things worth knowing before you order. Click any question to expand.
The ordering process — start to finish
We sell quarter, half and whole beef carcasses. You pay Wild Meadows for the carcass, then pay the butcher separately for butchery.
When placing your order, you choose your cuts using our cut sheet. We organise everything else — selecting the butcher and providing them with your completed sheet. We’re happy to help you complete the cut sheet if you’re unsure what to pick.
We process to order — once we have enough orders booked we confirm a harvest date with the mobile abattoir, and you’ll be notified by email. Collection is approximately 2 to 3 weeks after harvest, allowing time for the carcass to be hung and dry-aged on the bone for around 10 days, then processed into your chosen cuts.
Pickup locations
Pickup location depends on your region:
- Whangārei area — De Bauchery, Tikipunga
- Auckland area — Sausages by Design, Silverdale
Other butchers may be used depending on availability. Your pickup location will be confirmed with your harvest date notification.
Cut sheets — choosing your cuts
Complete your cut sheet online when you order — you can choose your preferred cuts, prep options (boneless, steaks, roasts), seasoning, and sausages. If you’re not sure what to pick, we can walk you through it.
Because this is similar to home kill, you’re honouring the whole animal and getting all the meat from it — eye fillet, scotch and sirloin alongside gravy beef, mince, and home-kill style sausages. You’re paying for the butchery, so the butcher is generally happy to handle special requests where possible.
Offal and offal pricing
Offal isn’t part of the weighed carcass but is available to purchase on a first-come basis (otherwise it’s sold elsewhere). Note on your cut sheet what you’d like and we’ll include it if available.
- Tongue, heart, liver, kidneys: carcass rate less $2/kg
- Cheeks and oxtail: $23/kg
- Corned tongue: available at additional cost from the butcher
Bones and fat are part of the carcass — included if you’d like them.
Payment terms
- A $500 deposit is required once we confirm a harvest date, to secure your order
- The final carcass amount is due to Wild Meadows once the animal is slaughtered and weighed
- The butcher’s fee is due to the butcher on or before collection of your order
Carcass pricing is $15/kg including GST. The advertised price at the time you pay your deposit is the price you pay — it won’t change. All prices are GST inclusive unless otherwise stated.
