01 · The history

Five generations on a wild coastline, led by women

When John Glendining ventured to the sheer cliffed isolation of the Waihua coastline in 1882, he began a legacy that has spanned generations. When he died suddenly, his wife Laura-Sarah stayed on to run the farm, beginning a proud heritage of women taking a leading hand in the operation of Waihua Station.

Through floods that destroyed the original homestead, the 1931 earthquake that reshaped the landscape, the loss of Rupert in World War Two, and decades of farming partnership and family change, the station has endured. Today, Rose Haynes runs the farm with her two daughters, continuing that tradition.

“A grand homestead looking out onto rugged hills and a wild sea, first and foremost a working sheep and beef farm.”

02 · The animals

Native pastures, salt winds, and two exceptional breeds

Waihua Station’s lamb comes from Black Reef Merino Crossbreeds, sustainably farmed on native coastal pastures fed by the salt winds of the Pacific Ocean. Only premium animals are hand selected for harvest, ensuring consistent quality and genuine taste. The station’s beef comes from Hawke’s Bay Heifers, sustainably farmed alongside the lamb on the same rugged coastal hill country. Both breeds are grass fed all year round.

The Black Sheep

Black Reef Merino Crossbreeds hand selected for harvest. Grazed on native coastal pastures with the salt winds of the Pacific, distinctive, real New Zealand lamb.

Hawke’s Bay Heifer

Hawke’s Bay Heifers sustainably raised on the same rugged coastal hill country. Grass fed, natural, and full of flavour, available by the quarter, half or whole beast.

Coastal character

The salt winds and native pastures of the Waihua coastline give the meat a character you simply cannot replicate. It tastes like the place it came from.
