Peter & Sue Evans — doing things differently since 2015

In typical Kiwi fashion, Peter and Sue come across as humble, likeable, and very caring — and that’s because they are. Since buying their farm at the head of the Kenepuru Sounds in 2015, they’ve been on a deliberate learning journey, exploring beef production concepts that more traditional farming mindsets have been reluctant to consider.

Their farm is one of the most uniquely placed in New Zealand — sitting deep in the Marlborough Sounds with around two-thirds of the property in native bush, accessed by both road and water. Remote, beautiful, and quietly extraordinary.

“Small can be, and often is, beautiful. Our objective was to create a sustainable business that was gentle on ourselves, our land, and our animals.”

02 — The Farm & Farming System

Soil first. Everything else follows.

When Peter and Sue bought the property, they quickly concluded that the conventional playbook wasn’t right for them. Rye grass monocultures propped up by synthetic inputs — with all the grass staggers, facial eczema, and internal parasite loading that comes with it — wasn’t a system they wanted to be part of.

Regenerative farming gave them the framework they were looking for. The first leverage point was the soil. Get that right, and the pastures respond. Get the pastures right, and the animals thrive. The name Salubre — meaning healthy in Spanish — says it all.

No synthetic inputs. Diverse, healthy pastures. Animals raised at a pace that suits the land, not the calendar.
