Four generations on the northern Wairoa
Greener Grasses is a fourth generation family farm alongside the northern Wairoa, near Dargaville in Northland. What began with their great-grandparents has been passed down β each generation building on the wisdom of those before them. They’ve adapted from traditional methods to regenerative practices while maintaining their commitment to quality livestock and careful land stewardship.
Their cattle are 100% grass fed and always on the move β daily shifting to fresh pasture, heading for literally greener grasses. This mimics natural cattle behaviour, improving animal health while building pasture diversity and soil structure.
“High quality NZ meat for NZ locals β an earth-friendly, low-waste source of sustenance for your family. Nutritious, flavourful and tender, direct from our paddock to your plate.”
Daily shifting to fresh pasture β holistic grazing done right
Greener Grasses uses holistic grazing because it improves soil health, pasture quality, and animal welfare simultaneously. By rotating cattle through paddocks daily, they allow pastures to rest and regenerate β building deeper roots and increasing organic matter.
This creates more resilient, productive land while raising healthier cattle on nutrient-rich forage and producing better quality beef, naturally. Animals are raised on the farm receiving daily care to ensure optimal health and well-being, before being harvested on-farm using a mobile abattoir.
Multiple premium breeds β all grass-fed
Greener Grasses raises a diverse range of premium beef breeds β all selected for their adaptability to the Northland environment and their exceptional eating quality on a grass-fed system.
Speckle Park
Canadian breed with distinctive speckled coat. Exceptionally well-marbled, tender beef. Naturally polled, easy calving, docile. Efficient feed conversion on grass.
Murray Grey
Australian heritage breed β quiet temperament, excellent marbling, and outstanding meat quality. Well-suited to New Zealand’s grass-fed systems.
Red Devon
One of the oldest beef breeds β known for thriving on grass alone. Rich, flavoursome beef with excellent fat distribution and a long farming history in NZ.
Fleckvieh
A dual-purpose European breed with impressive muscle development and good marbling. Produces full-flavoured beef with excellent yield on grass-based systems.
Charolais
French heritage breed known for its lean, large-framed beef. Excellent growth rates and high meat yields β often used to add size and muscle to crossbred cattle.
Hereford / Angus
Classic NZ beef breeds. Hereford and Angus are proven performers on grass β consistent eating quality, good marbling, and adaptable to New Zealand conditions.
