· Our Story ·
01 — The beginning

Built by farmers, for farmers and the people who eat their food

Out the Farm Gate began with a simple idea: two farmers wanted to build a direct connection between their farms and you, the person eating the food. As they set out, they realised many other farmers were eager to do the same — but didn’t know where to start.

That’s when Out the Farm Gate grew into something bigger — a platform dedicated to helping farmers forge meaningful connections with the people who enjoy their food.

Imagine your next steak — knowing exactly which farm it came from, how the animal lived, and the land it grazed on.

Meet Stephen

Out the Farm Gate isn’t a faceless marketplace. It’s built and run by Stephen — a farmer who wanted a better way to get honest meat from the paddock to your table.

He’s the one who talks to the farmers, lines up the kill dates and cut sheets, and works with the butchers behind the scenes — so you deal with one real person who knows exactly where your food came from.

“Draft — a line in Stephen’s own words about why he started Out the Farm Gate goes here.”

· Why Regenerative ·
03 — Soil first

Soil first. Everything else follows.

Regenerative farming sits at the heart of every farmer on Out the Farm Gate. We exist to connect people with NZ farmers who raise meat using practices that improve soil health, animal wellbeing, and long-term farm resilience.

At the core is an understanding that healthy soil is alive. A single teaspoon of living soil can contain hundreds of millions — even billions — of microorganisms working in partnership with plants. Through photosynthesis, plants send up to 30% of the sugars they produce into the soil to feed these microbes. In return, the microbes unlock nutrients that plants need to grow strong and resilient.

Our farmers actively build this soil life through diverse pastures, constant ground cover, and carefully managed grazing. Cattle are moved frequently — often once or twice a day — to mimic natural grazing patterns, stimulating soil biology and supporting thriving ecosystems above and below ground.
